There are many layers to the newest team in the USF Juniors paddock – Berg Racing. From history in Formula 1 to the running of a renowned American racing school, team owner Allen Berg has amassed a resume and a reputation that landed him in the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2019. Berg started in karting in British Columbia and moved into car racing in 1980, progressing through Formula Atlantic, Formula Pacific (Australia and New Zealand) and British F3 series, where he raced against the likes of Ayrton Senna and Martin Brundle. Allen competed in nine races in Formula 1 in 1986 with the Osella team and then moved on to enjoy much success in Mexican F2 in the early 1990s. Allen has been in motorsports for over 45 years and has been running his own eponymous racing school since 2007 - Allen Berg Racing Schools – which has been based at Laguna Seca since 2015. Allen’s son Alex is the co-owner of Berg Racing and, after years with the Mazdaspeed Spec MX5 and F4 US Championship programs, they’ve added a USF Juniors operation to their operation and plan to run a multi-car effort in 2026.
The team has acquired two Tatuus JR-23 cars to make their official competition debut this season after participating in the USF Pro Championships Fall Combine at Indianapolis last October. Alex will race for the team in 2026, coming off a partial season in the GB4 series in England. The obvious focus for Alex will be to use his considerable experience to build the team’s notebook of track and set-up information, and the second car remains open for a young driver hoping to build their experience with a top-quality team in 2026.
Berg has assembled an experience-laden staff for his USF Juniors effort. The crew includes veteran INDYCAR engineer Stefan Dwornik and highly-esteemed British race engineer Brian Ireland. Dwornik has five decades of experience in professional open-wheel racing, having worked in INDYCAR, Indy Lights, Formula Atlantic, Formula 3, and the USF Pro Championships ladder (formerly the Road to Indy). Ireland has been Race Engineer / Technical Director with many leading European race teams over the past three decades, most recently spending three seasons at Campos Racing. Nick Moore is the team’s chief mechanic and Nick Woolsey is the second mechanic. Joining Alex on the team’s experienced coaching staff is none other than Roberto Moreno, the former F1, INDYCAR, and Le Mans driver.
“Although the Berg name is best known for our racing school programs, and we are relatively unknown within the USF Pro Championships, I have operated race and championship-winning formula car racing teams for many years, in numerous categories,” offered Allen Berg. “We have established a proven leadership and engineering team as well as technical staff. In fact, both Alex and I have won races, as drivers, working with both Stefan and Brian. I raced against Roberto prior to the both of us competing in Formula One and I can tell you first-hand what an incredible driver he was. Counting on Roberto’s vast experience and technical knowledge, there is no one better to handle coaching duties for Berg Racing. All together, we have a very cohesive team and enter into USF with the sole purpose of winning races and contesting championships with our drivers.”
“The combination of this tight knit support team and with Alex behind the wheel, we are confident to be able to feel a competitive entry into the 2026 championship. The USF Pro Championships is a natural progression for our business, and with the significant experience of every team member we are hopeful to assist in development of racing careers of drivers seeking success in the USF Pro ladder system.”
Alex’s role with the team leverages five-plus years of car racing experience. After several years in regional and national karting in both Canada and the United States, Alex was selected to participate in the Mazda Shootout in 2020, where he won the Spec Mazda Teen Challenge scholarship to race in the NASA Spec MX5 Challenge in 2021. Berg finished second overall in his first season of car racing, taking home three wins and five podium finishes. He'd go on to be selected by Team Canada to race at the Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy in 2023, and then F4. Last year, Alex raced in the first half of the GB4 Championship in the UK with Graham Brunton Racing, winning at the season opening race at Donington Park before returning to pilot one of the Berg Racing cars in the JFC F4 Championship in the US.
“I’m very excited to be entering into the USF Pro Championships, not only as a driver, but team owner as well,” added Alex Berg. “Over the past few years, I’ve struggled to be in a competitive car in my European racing ventures, which is part of the reason I decided to regroup and put my eggs into my own basket, and race with Berg Racing, a team which I’m confident can provide me with a fast competitive car. Our engineers, Stefan Dwornik and Brian Ireland, have extensive backgrounds in Formula 1 and INDYCAR, and combined with the knowledge of my father, and another former F1 driver, Roberto Moreno, acting as our driver coaches for USF, I’m more than confident that as a new team, we will be turning heads both on and off the racetrack.”
Allen and Alex are excited to expand their open wheel racing program with the addition of the USF Juniors program, extending their own internal ladder of driver development that starts with the racing school.
