TURKU, Finland – Finnish driver Vilho Aatola, 17, delivered a consistently strong weekend in the USF Juniors Presented by Continental Tire in South Carolina. Aatola finished second, fourth and fifth across the three races, strengthening his hold on third place in the standings and moving to within just 21 points of the championship lead. The bigger picture of the weekend was clear: despite the challenges, he maximized the result.

“A good weekend. We scored three top-five finishes and closed the gap to the leaders in the points,” Aatola summarized.

From Podium Finish to Defensive Battle
Aatola finished second in Saturday’s opening race, but as the weekend progressed, the racing became more of a defensive battle. In the second race, Aatola had to avoid another car going off at the start and dropped from the lead group. He then fought back strongly from eighth place to finish fifth on track and fourth in the final results.

In the final race, Aatola got an excellent start and moved up to third, but a lack of straight-line speed forced him into defense mode.

“The car was drivable, but we were missing straight-line speed. I was able to fight, but in the end it wasn’t quite enough,” Aatola said.

Aatola crossed the finish line in fifth after a hard-fought battle.

Technical Challenges in the Background
The weekend’s challenges had already begun in the early sessions. The car was not performing as hoped in testing or before qualifying, and although the setup was improved for the races, the overall package was not fully competitive. During the races, the biggest issue was a lack of straight-line speed, which was especially noticeable in passing situations and while defending.

“We will change the engine for the next race. We believe that is where the problem is,” said team owner Ernesto Martinez.

Mature Performance Under Pressure
Despite the difficulties, Aatola’s weekend earned praise from within the team. His driving was clean, progressive, and, above all, mature—especially in a situation where many other drivers made mistakes.

“Vilho is doing a very mature job. He doesn’t damage the equipment and brings the car home in tough situations. Weekends like this make the difference in a championship fight,” said former INDYCAR driver and Indy Junior Academy founder Tero Palmroth.

Championship Battle Tightens
After six races, the championship standings are extremely close:

1. Ivan Machado Perez — 133
2. Max Mokarem — 132
3. Vilho Aatola — 112

Aatola closed the gap to the lead over the weekend and remains firmly in the championship fight. The USF Juniors series continues next in mid-May in Canada at the fast Canadian Tire Motorsport Park circuit.

“This gives us a good foundation to build on. We got the maximum out of the weekend and we know where we need to improve,” Aatola said, looking ahead.
